Congratulations Captain!

Captain Tom Moore has hit number one in the Official Charts - making him the oldest artist ever to do so. You can see his reaction to the news below:

Yup, not content with raising more than £28 million ($34.5m) for the NHS, or scooping a Pride of Britain Award, Capt Tom is now sitting in the top spot in the UK charts with his cover of 'You'll Never Walk Alone' with Michael Ball and the NHS Voices of Care Choir.

It was looking to be a close-run thing between 99-year-old Tom and The Weeknd, with his track 'Blinding Lights' - however, the star tweeted out yesterday encouraging his fans to throw their support behind Tom and his very worthwhile cause.

'You'll Never Walk Alone' took number one after selling 82,000 units (compared to 'Blinding Lights' which sold 69,000 units), also making it the fastest-selling single of 2020 so far. Proceeds from the single will go to NHS Charities Together.

Captain Tom said: "What wonderful news to receive today, a No.1 single and a record breaker too - my grandchildren can't believe I am a chart-topper!

"I have to thank Michael Ball, the NHS Voices of Care Choir and everyone behind the scenes, who shared their talents and expertise in order to raise money for the NHS, to whom we owe so much.

"And, of course, the public for buying the single and donating - we're in this together, and I am forever grateful for your support. And this just proves 'You'll Never Walk Alone'."

Michael Ball told OfficialCharts.com: "This is the most extraordinary thing, one of the most proudest moments of my career, but it's not about me, it's about Captain Tom. Thank you for giving him a Number 1 on his 100th birthday. You are the best, God bless ya."

Captain Tom, who - fact fans - is six years older than Queen and nine years older than the invention of sunglasses, has become a symbol of hope and togetherness for the UK, with people donating in their millions to support his challenge to walk 100 lengths of his garden ahead of his 100th birthday.

Speaking after he completed the lengths earlier this month, Tom told the BBC: "It's a lovely morning and I feel fine. I've been in the army, we're used to getting up early!

"It started off as a family joke, but I've been treated so well by the NHS - the service I've had has been absolutely marvellous. They've been kind, attentive... All the nurses and the doctors - and the backup people - they've done so well for me and for everyone at the moment.

"It's a fantastic sum of money. I would never have imagined that sum of money. It's unbelievable that people have been so kind. Maybe I was responsible for starting it, but not deliberately. It was purely out of gratitude for what they've done for me." What a hero.

If you want to donate - you can still do so here.
