John Legend and Christine Teigan are often looked upon as the perfect celebrity couple, but as the 'All of Me' singer revealed in a recent interview with the Guardian, even the ultimate 'couple goals'-type relationships don't come without their hardships.

The singer, 38, told the newspaper that during a particularly hectic and stressful period in his life, he attempted to break up with the 31-year-old model, but thankfully for their marriage, she wasn't having any of it.

John, who met wife Chrissy on the set of one of his music videos back in 2007, recalled: "I was really stressed and busy. I was just like, 'I'd just be happier single right now,' and she was like, 'No.'"

Luckily the celeb couple managed to resolve their differences and the situation had blown over within half an hour.

"She pushes me to be funnier," John told the newspaper. "Not because she's trying to, I think it's just being around her. And to be bolder."

The power couple are partly popular with fans due to their strong social media presence, something which John says is a way of seizing back power from the media and controlling their own public image.

"I think it devalues paparazzi photos when you control your own narrative," he says.

"I think we have enough wisdom to know when it's the right time to share and when it isn't. Occasionally, we'll make a mistake but, generally speaking, I'm happy with what we've chosen to share, and I think it's generally better than the alternative of going through publicists and tabloids."

In an interview with Cosmopolitan last weekend, the singer explained that maintaining an open line of communication is the key to his and Chrissy's happy marriage.

"There's no problem with openness in our relationship," he explained. "You know Chrissy. She doesn't hold anything back! I'm quite reserved, but being with someone like her inspires me to be open about my emotions. She brings them out of me because she's so open about hers."

He also reaffirmed his wife's recent revelation that the pair were trying for another baby: "Having a baby is a big challenge for a couple, and going through that together strengthens your bond because if you make it through [having a child], you know you can make it through anything.

"I think it's especially difficult when you can't conceive naturally. You want to feel like everything's working properly and want everything to be perfect, but sometimes it's not. I wouldn't say we can't conceive naturally, but I would say that it's enough of a challenge where it felt like we needed help. We're lucky that we're living in an age where we can conceive in other ways. [IVF] brought us Luna [the couple's daughter, born in April 2016] and hopefully it will bring us a few more awesome kids, too."
