Sir Elton John walked off stage mid-way through a concert because he was unable to carry on singing.

The legendary singer had been performing for almost two hours in Auckland, New Zealand, when he revealed that his voice had completely gone.

The 72-year-old went on to inform fans that he had been diagnosed with Walking Pneumonia, which is caused by bacteria that affects the lower and upper respiratory tract.

After attempting to sing one of his classics, 'Daniel', Sir Elton admitted defeat and apologised to the crowd before leaving the stage.

He said: "I've just completely lost my voice. I can't sing. I've got to go. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."

Standing up from his piano, the visibly shaken singer began crying and had to be comforted by a member of his crew.

The singe had to cut short his Auckland gig.

Despite cutting the gig short, fans stood up and gave the British icon a rapturous reception, applauding as he exited the stage.

Earlier on in the gig, Sir Elton had to interrupt things to be checked over by a medic. After a few minutes of silence at the Mt Smart Stadium, he returned to the music to crack on with some of his hits.

However, he later admitted that he wasn't sure how things were going to, saying: "I don't know how much longer I can sing, I just don't have anything left. I will try, but I just can't promise anything."

After cutting the concert short, Sir Elton took the opportunity to apologise to his adoring fans.

Writing on Instagram, he said: "I played and sang my heart out, until my voice could sing no more. I'm disappointed, deeply upset and sorry. I gave it all I had.

"Thank-you so much for your extraordinary support and all the love you showed me during tonight's performance. I am eternally grateful. Love, Elton xx."

The singer apologised to fans for having to cut his gig short.

Responding to the singer's post, fans piled in the comments to praise him and send their best wishes.

One follower said: "We're proud of you. So bloody proud. Please rest up. We love you."

A second wrote: "Oh noooo!!! Get well soon Elton."

Earlier this year, Taron Egerton won his first ever Golden Globe for his performance in Rocketman, in which he plays Sir Elton.

He was blown away by the honour and thanked everyone for their role in helping him win Best Actor in a Comedy/Musical.

You can imagine those closest to the actor would have been absolutely buzzing about the news but no one was happier than the person he portrayed in the film: Sir Elton John.

When the camera panned to Egerton's face, he looked speechless, but two seats away Sir Elton had his clenched fists in the air and looked to be screaming with excitement.

Even as Egerton walked up to accept his award - and throughout his acceptance speech - the singer couldn't contain his happiness.
