The world of music went into mourning after it was reported that Tom Petty had passed away.

He died at the age of 66 after suffering a cardiac arrest, with his passing being confirmed in a statement by Tony Dimitriades, who was the manager of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers.

Petty had a number of hits, such a 'Free Fallin', 'I Won't Back Down' and 'Runnin Down a Dream', which cemented him as a true legend of rock 'n' roll.

If you're too young to know, or are yet to discover his brilliance, this is what his songs would make you do...

Tributes poured in for the singer from fellow musicians and fans, who were keen to remember his work.

Many clips were posted of Petty performing, either by himself, with The Heartbreakers, or with a plethora of talent such as Jeff Lynne, Prince, Stevie Nicks, Bob Dylan and many more.

One clip in particular, which captures the brilliance of the 66-year-old, was when former Beatle George Harrison was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Sharing vocals with ELO's Jeff Lynne, he was accompanied by Harrison's son, Dhani, and Prince to perform 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps'.

It's so sad that the two people who stole the show, Petty with his singing and Prince with his outrageous guitar solo, have both left us.

Speaking of the event last year, Petty told the New York Times: "Olivia Harrison [George's widow] asked me if I would come along and induct George. I was told, 'Well, Prince is going to play too,' and I was like, 'Wow, that's fantastic'."

Late Monday night, premature stories of Petty's death had emerged on Monday evening following an inaccurate report that the LAPD had confirmed the news.

However, it was announced that the musician was still 'clinging to life' on Monday having suffered the cardiac arrest at his home in Malibu before the official statement in the early hours of Tuesday BST.

Petty had recently wrapped up a world tour, which included 53 shows in the US, Canada and the UK. He had two shows left to complete in November in New York.

After recently playing a show at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, a tweet on Petty's official account read: "Thanks to everyone for supporting us for the last 40 years! Without YOU there'd be no US!"

Fellow legend Bob Dylan, who co-founded the rock supergroup Traveling Wilburys along with Petty, former Beatle George Harrison, Jeff Lynne and Roy Orbison, is also mourning his friend's passing.

Dylan said in a statement to Rolling Stone: "It's shocking, crushing news. I thought the world of Tom. He was great performer, full of the light, a friend, and I'll never forget him."
