Snoop Dogg's First Album 'Doggystyle' Is 25 Years Old Today

Twenty-five years on, Snoop is still laid back, but definitely still has his mind on his money and his money on his mind

Wanna feel old? Snoop Dogg's first album Doggystyle came out exactly 25 years ago.

OK, so many of you wouldn't actually have been alive at that point, but the point remains. A quarter of a century has passed since the release of the album that launched Snoop into the public consciousness.

If you can, cast your mind back to 1993. The Internet was something that you only used if you worked with computers, mobile phones were kept in suitcases, and rap music was still very much in its infancy.

Back then, a young rapper called Snoop Doggy Dogg, from Long Beach, California, released a debut album on Death Row Records. This would go on to launch a career that most recently saw him honoured with a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame.

Produced by Dr Dre, the album contained 'Gin and Juice' - which has gone on to become absolutely synonymous with Snoop's style - as well as several other tunes that have gone on to become West Coast hip-hop classics.

Upon release, it was a critical success, with reviews praising Snoop's delivery and the inventiveness of Dre's production. It was the start of something pretty big.

However, it's also important to consider the variety of career paths that Snoop was able to embark upon, following the success of Doggystyle.

Tha Doggfather has sold over 37 million albums worldwide - 23.5 million copies in the USA alone - and performed with artists as varied as Katy Perry, The Lonely Island, and Psy.

Basically, the guy has never taken the road best travelled.

He has starred in films - with varied levels of success - and directed films - again, with varied degrees of success. Before you try to find them, some of Snoop's films will only be available on more 'niche' websites, if you catch my drift.

More recently, the Dogg has been getting into the world of business. As well as his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, he was awarded a special accolade from the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce as well for his business portfolio, which includes clothing and- of course - cannabis.

Oh, then there is his cookery book, From Crook to Cook. Sounds legit.

As yesterday was Thanksgiving, it is also worth remembering that Snoop gives away turkeys to those less fortunate. In 2016, that amounted to 3,000 Thanksgiving turkeys.

Not great if you're a turkey, but great if you're hungry.

Basically, he's an interesting dude, and today we should all be thankful for the success of that first album 25 years ago that started the whole thing.
