Ahead of the return of Saturday Night Takeaway this weekend, Ant and Dec have said they would love to make their own sitcom.

Fresh off the back of winning their 19th Best Presenter gong at the National Television Awards earlier this month, the two Geordie pals opened up about their careers and plans for the future.

Speaking to The Sun, the pair revealed they have spoken a few times about potentially creating a comedy series and hope one day it will become a reality.

And they've got form, so it's not too hard to imagine.

Ant told the publication: "We've talked about it quite seriously in the past. We've got quite close. We did a version of The Likely Lads, which we loved.

"And we loved the process of it - rehearsing it and doing it in front of a live studio audience."

Ant and Dec have tested the waters of comedy before with their version of The Likely Lads.

Dec adds: "You've got to get the idea right and make sure it's the right thing at the right time. The other thing is finding time to do it with the three big shows we've got."

Whether this comes to anything remains to be seen, for now they are fully focused on launching the new series of Saturday Night Takeaway.

But despite being the most popular television hosts of their generation, Ant and Dec say they still get nervous when it comes to doing live shows - especially when it doesn't go as planned.

He said: "You have people in the audience who we may have planned this elaborate surprise for, but quite simply they have sat in the wrong seats. That's happened loads of times.

"The person that you think you're going to hit, it's not them.

"They're sitting three people down and you're talking to the grandmother. So you have to keep an eye on them and check that they haven't gone off for a loo break. Or, we've gone live to someone's house and they're not there."

Dec added: "We've had it before where they haven't turned up at the studio, at all. They are the audience hit in part one and we've suddenly got eight minutes to fill.

"So that's why we get nervous. You really don't know what's going to happen."

Saturday Night Takeaway returns to our screens this weekend - airing at 7pm on the 22nd - aka Saturday night.

The 16th series promises a 'whole host of new and exclusive features, guests, live surprises and outrageous stunts,' as well as the return of many popular segments.

'Undercover' and 'I'm A Celebrity...Get Out Of Me Ear!' will both return, while 'The Place on the Plane' giveaway is set to become 'the biggest ever giveaway on British TV'.
