Charlie Brooker returned to our screens last night (14 May) with Charlie Brooker's Antiviral Wipe - which saw him once again offer his unique take on television highlights from recent months.

And during his latest episode he had a look at the moment Phillip Schofield revealed he was gay on This Morning.

The 58-year-old made a public statement during an episode earlier this year. However, Charlie felt it was a bit strange that it wasn't Phillip who read out the statement but his co-presenter Holly Willoughby.

Joking about the set up, Charlie said: "In a bizarre ventriloquist act Holly Willoughby temporarily identified as Phillip Schofield to announce that they were now identifying as a gay man, which is as 2020 as it gets."

He then placed an echo on her voice to make it appear as though she was a voice inside Phillip's head.

Charlie went on: "Hang on, this is weird actually because when she speaks and it cuts to him, it feels like you're hearing his internal monologue, especially if you put some reverb over the top.

"Anyway with that, after 58 years the beloved silver-haired This Morning wingman had come out. Just in time for the government to tell him and the rest of us to go back in."

The skit and the show in general went down a storm, with lots of people saying they had missed it and that its return came at the right time.

Taking to Twitter, one person wrote: "Ugh watching Charlie Brooker's Antiviral Wipe got me missing Screenwipe and all the other stuff, need more of that ridiculous curmudgeon on my screen again!!"

A second put: "Ventriloquist act Phillip and Holly. He actually went there!"

Another commented: "Just watched #Antiviralwipe and haven't felt this satisfied in a long while, let me tell you."

Following his emotional admission in February, Phillip sat down with Holly for a chat.

He told Holly: "Everyone I've spoken to have all been so supportive and loving and caring. My entire family have grabbed us and said, 'It's OK, it's OK, we love you, we are proud of you'.

"Every person I tell, it gets a little lighter and a little lighter. At the same time I've made this decision which is essentially for me and my head.

"Of course I'm really very aware that Steph [Lowe, his wife] and the girls are watching this and we are all together. They have been supporting us as we get to this moment."
