Reiner, father of filmmaker and activist Rob Reiner, continued to stay in the public eye into his 80s and 90s with roles in Oceans Eleven, Family Guy and American Dad.

Taking to Twitter to pay tribute to the legend, one fan wrote: "Carl Reiner was a lovely, kind, and generous man. The world will miss him just once: Continuously. #RIPCarlReiner."

Another added: "Any young actors who want to pursue comedy, study Carl Reiner. Go down a YouTube spiral right now. Start with Sid Caesar and Our Show of Shows and go from there. He was THE MASTER. Thank you for the hundred year Master Class, Sir. You will be missed."

Carl's friend, fellow actor Alan Alda, commented: "My friend Carl Reiner died last night. His talent will live on for a long time, but the loss of his kindness and decency leaves a hole in our hearts. We love you, Carl."

On 28 June, just two days ago, a tweet went out from Carl Reiner's account which read: "Nothing pleases me more than knowing that I have lived the best life possible by having met & marrying the gifted Estelle (Stella) Lebost---who partnered with me in bringing Rob, Annie & Lucas Reiner into to this needy & evolving world."

RIP Carl Reiner.
