The Los Angeles Police Department responded to an incident at Lovato's Hollywood Hills home on Tuesday night, where the singer was found unconscious.

She was treated with an anti-overdose drug called Naloxone before being rushed to a hospital. She is now in a stable condition, according to several reports in the American media.

The spokesperson for her family told NBC News: "Demi is awake and with her family who want to express thanks to everyone for the love, prayers and support. Some of the information being reported is incorrect and they respectfully ask for privacy,"

Lovato has struggled with substance misuse problems for several years now and has spoken openly about her battles against it.

Speaking as part of a YouTube documentary last year, she spoke about her use of cocaine. She said: "I was scared because my mom always told me that your heart could just burst if you do it,

"But I did it anyways, and I loved it the first time that I did it."

She also discussed her issues in a recent song, entitled 'Sober'.

The lyrics read: "Mommy, I'm so sorry I'm not sober anymore. And daddy please forgive me for the drinks spilled on the floor."

"I'm sorry that I'm here again, I promise I'll get help. It wasn't my intention, I'm sorry to myself."

This latest issue has reportedly caused her to cancel the final date of her 'Tell Me You Love Me' world tour that was supposed to conclude with a performance in Atlantic City, New Jersey, later this week.

Support for Lovato has been offered by several other celebrities and friends after the news broke of her suspected overdose.

TV talk show host Ellen DeGeneres tweeted: "I love [Demi Lovato] so much. It breaks my heart that she is going through this. She is a light in this world, and I am sending my love to her and her family."

Fellow American singer/songwriter Brad Paisley said: "My friend [Demi Lovato] is one of the kindest, most talented people I've ever met. Praying for her right now, addiction is a terrifying disease. There is no one more honest or brave than this woman."

Lovato is one of several prominent musicians who started their career on the Disney Channel. She has enjoyed massive success with her six albums to date.

She has also been named as one of TIME Magazine's most influential people because of her openness and support for those suffering from mental illness.
