Dave Rainford, a regular on BBC's Eggheads, has passed away.

Jeremy Vine, the show's presenter, announced the news on Twitter:

Fans of the tea time quiz show - which sees a group of five contestants go head to head with the Eggheads (five quiz and game show champions) - became concerned about Dave's absence on the show.

Taking to Twitter, Dave told viewers he was unable to take part in the latest recordings due to an illness.

He wrote: "Brand new Eggheads starting on Monday. I was still recuperating when these programmes were recorded, but I can promise you that there are some great shows coming up with excellent challengers that will keep you on the edge of your seats. Keep watching."

Responding to Jeremy Vine's tweet, a fan said: "That is sad. He was on our Egghead shift and was lovely, he seemed to be a person who really relished the fun of it."

Another added: "Gutted Jeremy. Manchester legend and one of the nicest guys ever," while a third commented: "No way used to spend many a night listening to him on James Stannage show on Piccadilly radio. Rip Tremendous knowledge Dave."

LADbible has contacted the BBC for a statement.
