2017 was a big year for Ed Sheeran, as he basically spent the entirety of last year tearing up and re-writing the record books. He released his third album, Divide and to say it was a success is like saying that Lionel Messi is quite good at football.

It finished the year in the number one spot in the album charts, having been there on seven other occasions (a record), he was the most streamed artist on Spotify with 6.3 billion streams, and the album became the fastest selling album by a male artist.

On top of that, he broke the record for the highest opening week sales ever by a male artist, broke opening streaming and vinyl sales records, became an MBE and appeared in Game of Thrones. Not bad for a lad from Halifax armed only with an acoustic guitar and a loop pedal.

Anyway, you'd think that a year like that would see him pretty much nailed on to win all of the awards on offer, but you'd be wrong. This week he's been nominated for four BRIT Awards, which isn't too bad going by anyone's standards, but he's been shoved into second place by Dua Lipa, who has received five nominations.

Yes, the young singer from London is up for the gongs in the British female solo artist, breakthrough act, best single, best video, and British album of the year (the last three of which she will compete against Ed in).

Ed got the nod for the British solo male artist, as well as the three others that Dua Lipa is also up for.

Lipa enjoyed a remarkable rise to power throughout 2017 off the back of her self-titled debut album, as well as singles like 'New Rules' and 'Be the One'.

The Best British Album category is the biggest award of the night will see the two stars go head to head with each other, as well as rapper J Hus, singer/songwriter Rag 'N' Bone Man, and Stormzy.

The third biggest selling album of the last year - Sam Smith's The Thrill of it All - surprisingly received no nominations whatsoever, though it is eligible to be up for next year's awards given that it was only released in November 2017.

The awards ceremony will take place on Wednesday 21 February at The O2 Arena in London. It will also be broadcast live to viewers on ITV.
