Rapper Fetty Wap has been indicted along with five other people on a charge of drugs trafficking conspiracy.

The federal prosecutors say that the men are alleged to have transported and distributed drugs that include heroin and fentanyl in Long Island, New York.

CNN claims to have seen the indictment, and the musician - who is actually called Willie Junior Maxell III - was arrested at Citi Field, the home of baseball team the New York Mets, on Friday afternoon, and is expected to be arraigned today at a federal court in Brooklyn.

The indictment is reportedly dated September 29, but was unsealed today and sees the 30-year-old recording artist charged with one count of conspiracy to distribute and possess controlled substances.

The five other people indicted are also charged with an additional count for use of firearms in connection with a drugs trafficking crime.

In a press release, the authorities responsible for the indictment stated that there was an alleged pipeline of drugs that runs from the east to west coast of the United States, and it was 'contributing to the addiction and overdose epidemic we have seen time and time again tear people's lives apart.

It is alleged that between June 2019 and June 2020, the defendants obtained the drugs on the west coast of the USA before using United States Postal Service vehicles with hidden compartments, as well as enlisting drivers, to get the drugs over to New York on the other side of the country.

The US Justice Department said: "Maxwell was a kilogram-level redistributor for the trafficking organization,

"The fact that we arrested a chart-topping rap artist and a corrections officer as part of the conspiracy illustrates just how vile the drug trade has become," added Michael Driscoll of the FBI's New York Office.

United States Attorney Breon Peace said: "As alleged, the defendants transported, distributed and sold more than 100 kilograms of deadly and addictive drugs, including heroin and fentanyl, on Long Island, deliberately contributing to the opioid epidemic that has devastated our communities and taken too many lives,"

He continued: "We will continue to work nonstop with our law enforcement partners to keep our neighborhoods [sic] safe from the scourge of dangerous drugs and gun violence."

This is not the first time that Maxwell has been on the wrong side of the law, as he was arrested in 2016 after he was stopped by New Jersey Police in Cedar Grove.

He famously then brought $175,000 in cash to his court date to pay any potential fines.
