A new season of Stranger Things is on the horizon, and according to one of its stars, it's the 'scariest yet'.

Joe Keery, who plays Steve Harrington in the retro sci-fi drama, has claimed the fourth instalment is much more sinister than any that have come before.

Speaking to Total Film, the 28-year-old said fans are in for a treat when it eventually hits screens - although, depending on the state of the world, that could be some time off yet.

The actor said: "I think that this year - and I know I say this every single year - but this is definitely going to be a lot scarier than prior years, because last year was pretty dark."

He added: "Oh man, it's pretty amazing - the Duffer brothers have really done it again."

The trailer for the upcoming season landed earlier this year, clearing up one of the biggest mysteries surrounding Jim Hopper (David Harbour) - whether he was dead or not.

Well, it looks like he's definitely alive and is the 'prisoner' referred to at the end of the last season.

Speaking at Liverpool Comic Con, the 45-year-old revealed that the new series will delve deeper into his past.

He said: "There are these three things that we've established in the season that if we don't pay off, it means that they're bad writers and the Duffer Brothers are very good writers."

The new series will also delve into Hopper's backstory.

"So I know specifically that in Season 4 we will give you a big, huge reveal about Hopper's backstory."

The actor also admitted that with he way things have progressed with the pandemic, it looks like the new series could be held up.

He said: "It was supposed to come out early next year, I think, although I don't have authority on this.

"Now I don't know. That'll probably be pushed back. Hopefully we can get back to work but I don't know what that looks like."

As well as Hopper, it looks as though Robin Buckley is here to stay after she became one of the standout characters from the third season.

The show's writers and creators, the Duffer Brothers, were asked on Twitter what their favourite Robin Buckley line was and they responded by saying: "A season 4 line so you're going to have to wait to get that answer."

Back in November the writers shared a photo of the season four script, asking fans: "Looking for new members... Are you in?"
