The upcoming sixth season of House of Cards will be the last, it's been reported.

Netflix is currently working on the final episodes of the political drama, which was its first proper push into original programmes, with its massive success helping to pave the way for loads of Netflix Originals.

The last 13 episodes will air next year and will, again, star Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright as the political power-couple, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

A representative from Netflix confirmed to TVLine that this would be the final season less than 24 hours after an allegation of sexual assault was made against Spacey by actor Anthony Rapp. Rapp says Spacey made a sexual advance towards him when he was just 14 and Spacey was 26.

Spacey responded to the claims by apologising for his "inappropriate drunken behavior"; he also came out as gay. Both his apology and the timing of him coming out have been heavily criticised by many, including LGBT rights group GLAAD.

Sarah Kate Ellis, president and CEO of GLAAD, told The Hollywood Reporter: "This is not a coming-out story about Kevin Spacey, but a story of survivorship by Anthony Rapp and all those who bravely speak out against unwanted sexual advances. The media and public should not gloss over that."

However, TVLine reports that the decision to end House of Cards was made months ago, and has no relation to the recent allegations made against its star.

Creator of House of Cards, Beau Willimon, who left the show at the end of season four, took to twitter to make a statement earlier today:

Filming for the sixth season began last month, it will premier on the streaming service in 2018.
