American actor Jennifer Lawrence is stepping away from the limelight in order to get young people interested in politics.

Youths are often criticised by older generations for not taking enough of an interest in how our government works, but there's so much that's going on in your teenage years and early 20s that it's sometimes hard to find time to look into politics.

But J Law is hoping to change that once the proverbial dust from her upcoming film Red Sparrow settles.

Speaking with Entertainment Tonight: "I'm going to take the next year off. I'm going to be working with this organisation as a part of Represent.Us, trying to get young people engaged politically on a local level."

"It doesn't have anything to do with partisan [politics]. It's just anti-corruption and stuff trying to pass state by state laws that can help prevent corruption, fix our democracy."

Represent.Us is a non-for-profit organisation that tries to get laws enacted that 'top political bribery, end secret money, and fix our broken elections'.

Lawrence has never been shy in the past about her interest in politics, protesting with Cameron Diaz and Adele during last month's Women's March. She also told Oprah for a Hollywood Reporter article that she knows exactly what she'd say if she ever met US President Donald Trump.

"I've got a pretty good speech. And it ends with a martini to the face," she said, laughing.

In that piece, she foreshadowed her desire to take some time off from acting to travel around the country and speak to high schools and university campuses.

She said: "I would love to help pass a bundle of laws [against government corruption]. We'd be able to pass state-by-state legislation to help [stop] corruption in our government."

Some of the biggest award shows in the past few months haven't exactly been soft, apolitical affairs. Actors and musicians have called out Donald Trump, corruption, inequality, social justice and, of course, the #TimesUp and #MeToo movements.

Ms Lawrence was awarded Sherry Lansing Leadership Award at The Hollywood Reporter's 2017 Women in Entertainment Power 100 breakfast. During her speech she told the crowd how important it is to make a statement on any given issue.

"This last year has been a trying and challenging time in our world and our industry specifically. Every day, we wake up to a myriad of headlines that deeply impact us, from around the globe.

"It's not easy to speak out. It's not easy to face criticism on a global scale. But the fact is I have been given a platform, and if I don't use it, then I don't deserve it."
