Richard Madeley Reveals Why He Was Taken To Hospital During I'm A Celebrity

Richard Madeley Reveals Why He Was Taken To Hospital During I'm A Celebrity

Richard Madeley’s time in the castle was cut short after he was taken to hospital

Richard Madeley has said extreme dehydration and a lack of sleep lead to his hospitalisation during his brief stint on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!

As a result of his trip to hospital, Madeley was unable to continue in the show as he had left its ‘Covid bubble’.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain, the 65-year-old said: “I think I got dehydrated. It was actually quite disturbing.

“I'd been up for 20 hours, I don't think I got to bed until 4-4.30 in the morning. I'm quite bad at remembering to drink anyway.

“As I snuggled in for the night, I thought, ‘I haven't had a drink, I'll have a big drink in the morning’. I woke up babbling, I didn't know where I was, I couldn't string a sentence together.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Madeley admitted to thinking that before he took part, he believed the whole show was ‘pretend’.

He told Susanna Reid and Ben Shephard: “We all thought, yeah, they show us the instruments of torture and the rubbish beds and all the rest of it, but then we’d done that bit that they’d say ‘anyway, here’s your food and actually you’re not sleeping there, you’re sleeping here.’

"It was a game of pretend, we thought.”

At this point, Reid cut in and asked: “And there’s a behind the scenes… sort of, luxury chill out zone?”

To which Madeley confirmed that that is what he and his campmates thought, but they were very wrong.

He went on: “No, no. We were in clink. David Ginola was really fed up about it. The next morning, he woke up and he tried the doors and they were locked. He said, ‘we are in prison. I did not sign up for this. I did not sign up to be chucked into jail, I did nothing wrong.’”

Madeley spent just days inside Gwrych Castle in North Wales before he was taken to hospital in the early hours of the morning.

In a statement, an I’m A Celeb spokesperson revealed that Madeley wouldn’t be going back into the castle - they said: "Our strict Covid protocols means Richard has sadly had to leave the show as he is no longer in the bubble the celebrities form when entering the castle.

"He has been a truly brilliant campmate and we thank him for being part of this series."
