People on social media have reacted in horror.

When fighters go into the ring, octagon, cage or whatever, they know they're putting their bodies on the line and could end up in hospital or even dead.

While it's not surprising that they get injured, the way the injury happens is still sickeningly gross.

Take Sofiane Boukichou's savagely broken leg for example.

The cage fighter walked into the ring confident and raring to square off against Tom Aspinall. Sadly, he wasn't able to walk out of the ring.

He went for a low kick, which was quickly blocked by his opponent and ended up snapping his lower leg in half. You can see the blood-curdling moment here:

One commentator didn't even sound surprised as Sofiane dropped to the floor and seemed in shock from the injury.

People on social media congratulated both fighters after the intense moment.

One person wrote: "A bit of credit, that was great technique and reaction on the check. Cat like. Wasn't even that telegraphed."

Another added: "Not the way Tom would have wanted the fight to end. But shown himself to be a Gentleman and a true sportsman as well as an athlete and fighter."

"Ugh, poor guy. That's almost as gnarly as Silva's one. Hope he makes a full recovery," said a third.

Silva famously broke his leg in a UFC middleweight title bout against Chris Weidman in one of the most shocking endings to a fight. The Brazilian threw a leg-kick which was checked by Weidman, resulting in a horrific injury.

Silva's iconic leg injury happened in 2013.

It took Silva just 13 months to step back inside the famed Octagon.

Leg injuries occur every once in a while and yet they still illicit the same reaction from fans.

An injury suffered by an amateur MMA fighter on the undercard of America Kombat Alliance's Rite of Passage 6 produced the same results from people on social media.

Jonathan King's leg exploded after throwing a leg-kick straight against his opponents knee, falling to the canvas after he tried to stand on it.

The promotion provided an update on King's well-being, saying: "Jonathan King just got out of recovery this morning. The doctor said surgery to set the leg went really well.

"Physical therapy starts tomorrow morning and he should be cleared to travel home this week."

Here's hoping Sofiane gets the treatment he needs and gets on the road to recovery soon.

Here's also hoping I never have a leg injury like that again.
