The Memes Are Flooding In After The Weeknd's Super Bowl Performance

The Memes Are Flooding In After The Weeknd's Super Bowl Performance

The Weeknd's performance has certainly sparked the internet's creativity

For those of us who stayed up late enough to watch it in the UK, the Super Bowl has been a rip-roaring show.

However, those who did brave the wee small hours to catch the NFL's showpiece event have also borne witness to the birth of a new phenomenon.

No, not Tom Brady - he's 43, after all - it's the meme of The Weeknd wandering around in a maze of mirrors looking thoroughly confused.

Of course, The Weeknd - real name Abel Tesfaye - took the headline slot for a compelling half time show during the 55th staging of the Super Bowl.

He ran through a whistle-stop tour of his greatest hits, as well as treating fans to a wonderful and - at times - bizarre stage show.

Whilst a large part of that saw Tesfaye dancing alongside a large number of other folks wearing the same clothes as him, but with large white bandages on their faces, another part saw him wandering through a reflective hallway looking about as if he was lost.

That's what has sparked the meme avalanche on this occasion.

Some have compared it to looking for a bathroom in a pub when you're a bit p***ed - remember that? - or looking for your mates at a crowded festival, but as with many memes, there's a lot of variety.

Others have said that it's akin to finding your way out of an Ikea superstore, or - rather cruelly, given the situation - Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes looking for his teammates.

At the time of writing, the game isn't actually over yet, but it might as well be for all intents and purposes.

Barring a comeback the likes of which has rarely ever been seen in any sport, Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will have picked up the Vince Lombardi Trophy and Brady himself will have become the oldest ever quarterback to win the Super Bowl, again.

However, at least the losing team will be able to cheer themselves up by checking out some of the new memes that they - in their own small way - played a part in creating.

Sure, they might not take that quite the same way as having won the Super Bowl, but maybe in time they'll look back and laugh.

It'll be all they've got, to be fair.
