Spotify Wrapped 2021 has just landed and the top songs, artists, albums, podcasts, and other insights about listeners' habits have been revealed.
In case you’re unaware, Spotify Wrapped is an annual event in December which shows subscribers insights into their personal listening habits as well as the most-streamed artists and songs globally.
Spotify measures listeners’ usage on the app between 1st January and 31st October to pull together the Wrapped insights in December each year. Subscribers should now be able to unveil their most-streamed tracks of 2021 on the mobile app.
For the second year in a row, Puerto Rican Reggaeton star Bad Bunny takes the title of most-streamed artist in the world on Spotify - all without releasing a new album this year.
Here’s the top five artists streamed globally on Spotify this year:
A track from Lil Nas X’s debut album has made it into the world’s top five. This year has been the ‘Old Town Road’ singer’s best year yet with the release of Montero, being given his own national day in his hometown of Atlanta and also bringing Dolly Parton on board as one of his fans.
‘MONTERO (Call me by your name)’ takes second place in the world’s top five most-streamed songs.
American actress and singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo, who’s known for her roles in the Disney Channel series Bizaardvark , has two songs in the top five most-streamed:
It doesn’t stop here for Olivia Rodrigo as she’s also earned herself a place in the top five albums streamed globally.
With Ed Sheeran and Adele both releasing new albums this year, we assume it would have been hard for many other artists to bag a place in the top five most-streamed albums. Unfortunately, Adele released 30 after Spotify stopped measuring the data for this year’s Wrapped, so she’s unlikely to have made the top 5 lists.
Ed Sheeran heads out on his first international tour since 2019 come 2022 and tickets sold out within minutes of going up for sale.
We can’t say we’re surprised at this one. We know our readers love The Joe Rogan Experience and it looks like many others do too.
Despite some of his er.. more controversial episodes getting removed from Spotify, he’s still earned himself the top spot on this year’s top five most-streamed podcasts globally.
In addition, Spotify found that nostalgia was a major trend among listeners this year. “Nostalgia played a role in people’s listening in 2021 as fans rediscovered old favourites—and new generations adopted them as well,” the streaming platform said. “Let’s face it: There are certain songs and albums that just sound like home (in a good way).”
