Maybe we're just victims of sophisticated marketing campaigns but when you're particularly parched on a hot summer's day - or feeling violently hungover after a heavy night out - truly nothing can quench your thirst like an ice cold can of Coke.

It's for this reason we are not so surprised to learn that Coca-Cola has come out on top of the list of the best-selling brands in Ireland. What's more, it has ranked at number one for a record-breaking 17 consecutive years - quite the testament to Ireland's sweet tooth.

The same list, which is published annually by grocery retail trade magazine Checkout in partnership with NielsenIQ, shows gains for iconic Irish crisps brand Tayto which climbed to number two; pushing Dairy Milk down one spot to round off the Top 3.

Avonmore (#5) and Brennans (#6) were the other iconic Irish brands that managed to claim spots in the Top 10.

In other movers and shakers, 7UP sadly lost its extremely apt number seven spot which it has coincidentally held every year since 2011, bar 2019.

Energy drink brands Red Bull and Monster both enjoyed rises in sales this year moving up a couple of spots on the list whilst biscuit brand Jacobs dropped two spots to round off the Top 10.

"It is great to see so many Irish brands among this year's biggest movers, with wonder brand VITHIT leaping up the rankings by 25 places, to number 43, from number 68 in 2020," says Maev Martin, editor at Checkout.

"Another highly successful Irish brand, Stafford's Bakeries, rises an impressive 24 places, from number 86 to number 62, while family-run brand Keogh's, which entered the Top 100 in 2018, at number 96, rises 23 places, from number 93 to number 70 this year.

"While Irish brands continue to make their mark on our Top 100 Brands list, well-known Irish brands are also newcomers to a few of our Top 100 Categories. These include Keogh's, in Popcorn; The Happy Pear, in Chilled Pizza; Keohane's, in Frozen Prepared Fish Products; and Chicken with Attitude, in Frozen Prepared Poultry Products."
