The third season of After Life has finished filming, Ricky Gervais has confirmed.

Posting a photo of himself and his on-screen pet dog Brandy, Gervais wrote on Twitter: "Day 35 on #AfterLife3. And that's a wrap."

Netflix confirmed a third season last year, with Gervais - who is the show's creator, director, writer, producer and star - saying filming would kick off in April 2021.

Speaking to LADbible, Gervais said the programme was simply 'too good' not to bring Tony and co back for another run out.

He said: "I've never had a reaction like this, so there is that [sense of] 'Oh, I could only ruin it', you know what I mean. So you've got to try and make it better.

"Which is good, it's a good state of mind to be in, it's a good pressure. I've got to make this better than before - that's a lovely pressure to have as a writer.

"That's not a reason not to do a second series because the first one went down so well... Most people want it the other way - they want too many series because they think it's their favourite show.

"I get that, as a viewer I get it, but as an artist you have got to get out a bit early. But as I say, this is the first one I've - I think I'm gonna do a third because the world we've created is too good and rich."

However, he has also said that the third would be After Life's final instalment.

Speaking to The Sun, Gervais said: "I've already made my mind up - there just won't be a fourth.

"You never say never but you put those things out there to make you remember because it's tempting, it's very tempting."

Likening his job to a conductor leading an orchestra as his back is turned to the audience, Gervais added: "The audience think they want another one but they don't know, they're not sure, so you've got to be careful."
