Last night Bridgerton star Regé-Jean Page announced he wouldn't be returning to the show as Simon, the Duke of Hastings, calling it the 'ride of a life time'.

Now, after many people fell in love with the character, threats are being made that viewers will boycott the series' second instalment if he doesn't have a part.

Taking to Twitter, one person wrote: "Well, not sure what the point of watching this now. We all know that Simon was the reason why most of us were watching this."

Another added: "I get that this is because you guys are following the books, but you realize that Rege-Jean Page is one of the biggest reasons why Season 1 was such a huge success!? We watched because of him! There's really nothing to looking forward to now with future seasons."

A third commented: "Wait but what's the point of watching the show then?"

The official Twitter account for the series also shared the news in the form of an update from the infamous Lady Whistledown who explained that it is the turn of Lord Anthony Bridgerton to find a Viscountess.

A more accepting viewer wrote: "In case you don't get this... there are 8 books for the Bridgerton story, each book featuring one of the 8 children of the late viscount Bridgerton season two apparently is going to be on the second book, another child, Anthony hence why there won't be need for the Duke(simon)."

Another predicted: "I think Rege and Phoebe will still be starring as Simon & Daphne, but only as cameos. Because in s2, we'll have Anthony & Kate as the main leads."
