Dani Harmer is to return to play the role of Tracy Beaker in a new BBC series next year.

My Mum Tracy Beaker will see Harmer once again playing the character she played between 2002 and 2005 and again in 2010 to 2012, but this time things are going to be slightly different.

Dani, who is now 31-years-old, will portray Beaker as the single mother of a 12-year-old daughter called Jess.

She told The Sun on Sunday: "I can't wait to return again to the role of Tracy.

"I'm a fan myself and want to know what happens next and where this journey takes her.

"Being a mother, I know how much it changes you. So, I'm looking forward to seeing how it has changed Tracy but still keeping her the same feisty, strong female lead that people know and love."

The show is thought to be coming out early on in 2021 in BBC iPlayer.

Harmer took on the role - based on the hugely popular book series by Jacqueline Wilson - for the first time in 2002 for The Story of Tracy Beaker.

She then reprised the role between 2010 and 2012 in Tracy Beaker Returns.

Since then, Harmer has also set up her own acting school called Dani Harmer Academy, and appeared on the tenth series of Strictly Come Dancing, finishing fourth overall but making the grand final episode.

She has admitted in the past that she's still frequently recognised and stopped in the street as a result of her role as Tracy Beaker, but says that she's fine with the attention because it means that the cast and crew did 'a great job' bringing the books to life.

Harmer said: "I do have the odd occasion where people actually think I am Tracey Beaker in real life and the whole thing is real.

"And I just put it down to the fact that we really did a great job on that programme."

The book itself was published back in 2018, and Wilson said that she decided to return to the character because of her interest in showing what Tracy would be like now that she's a mother.

Wilson told The Observer: "With Tracy, you get all this mouthiness, all this cheek, all this rushing around seemingly not being scared - but inside, even as an adult, there are a lot of insecurities."

It's not known exactly when My Mum Tracy Beaker will be released, but you can watch all of the previous episodes and series featuring Beaker on BBC iPlayer now.
