The adorable French bulldog who played Stella in Modern Family has died just weeks after the show's final episode was filmed.

The dog, who was called Beatrice, was around 10 years old, according to The Blast.

Modern Family star Jesse Tyler Ferguson tweeted out a cute photo of himself alongside the pooch, writing: "Rest in peace sweet Beatrice. We love you so much."

In the show, Stella was the pampered pet of Jay Pritchett, played by Ed O'Neill. According to her owners, the pair were as close off-screen as they were on it.

Guin and Steve Solomon, from Good Dog Animals, told blogger Bodie on the Road that O'Neill always 'looked out for' Beatrice on set.

They said: "Ed O'Neill is in love with her! It's very easy working with him because he brings Beatrice treats like popcorn and always looks out for her - like we'll be doing scenes in the backyard by the pool and in between takes he'll say, 'Would you please get Beatrice an umbrella, she's in the sun!'"

Beatrice played Stella from the fourth season right through until the show wrapped earlier this year.

She also appeared in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Workaholics.

Modern Family ran for 11 seasons and its final episode is due to air in the coming weeks.

Over the years it hosted a number of celebrity cameos, however, a recent episode managed to get not one, but two megastars.

Friends actor Courteney Cox and England football legend David Beckham both appeared in a recent episode.

The stars played themselves in the episode, which ended with them sharing a hot tub with Cam (Eric Stonestreet) and Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson).

A synopsis from ABC explained: "As everyone spends the day at Alex's fancy new apartment building, The Prescott, Luke (Nolan Gould) and Manny (Rico Rodriguez) manage to find themselves in a mix-up with Higgins (guest star Stephen Merchant) that might have them hanging out with guest stars David Beckham and Courteney Cox."

Beckham was delighted to be invited onto the show, revealing in a behind-the-scenes clip: "I'm here in LA on the set of Modern Family, which I'm really excited about.

"I'm not just a massive fan, but to be here and to be playing a part - that's really incredible, so I'm really excited."
