Gillian Anderson's Accent Confuses Viewers As She Accepts Emmy Award For The Crown

Viewers were left confused by Gillian Anderson's accent as she accepted an award at the Emmys. Listen for yourself here:

Yep, sure enough, along comes another awards night, along comes another award for Gillian Anderson - and along comes a load more confusion about where she's from.

Anderson scooped the award for outstanding supporting actress in a drama series for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in The Crown - which absolutely cleared up, winning outstanding drama series, as well as a hatful of other awards for writing, directing and acting.

The Crown was the big winner on the night.

Accepting her award, Anderson paid tribute to her manager of 20 years, Connie Freiberg, who believed in her 'when no one else would'.

However, it was believing the 53-year-old's American accent which a lot of viewers had trouble with:

Let Anderson serve as a reminder to all of us that we must be wary around actors, because they are con artists. For while she may have played a number of British characters on-screen, that is just her professionally pretending.

She was born in Chicago, Illinois, but was raised in London, before moving back to the US when she was 11. Her family kept a flat in London and she would spend her summers there.

She now lives in the UK capital too, so perhaps we shouldn't be so surprised that she can switch between American and British accents - given she is an actor who's lived a very transatlantic life.
