It's been available to view for less than a week but fans are already calling Watchmen the best show of the year.

The HBO series hit our screens on Sunday (20 October) and has wowed audiences and critics the world over.

Impressed with what they have seen so far, thousands of people have taken to social media, falling over themselves with praise for the show.

One gushing fan wrote: "This might be the best show of 2019. Bang on Pilot."

A second commented: "Wow. That Watchmen pilot is one of the best first eps of a show I've seen. Topping it will be a feat."

Meanwhile, a third person was even more forthright, posting: "Watchmen is the best show on HBO right now."

The synopsis for the first episode reads: "In an alternate America where police conceal their identities behind masks to protect themselves from a terrorist organisation, Detective Angela Abar (Regina King) investigates the attempted murder of a fellow officer under the guidance of her friend and Chief, Judd Crawford (Don Johnson).

"Meanwhile, the Lord of a Country Estate (Jeremy Irons) receives an anniversary gift from his loyal servants."

Created by Damon Lindelof and following on from events in Alan Moore's iconic graphic novel, the series centres on a war between an uprising of mask-wearing vigilantes - seemingly inspired by the comics' antihero Rorschach - and the Tulsa Police Force, who also hide behind masks.

While some of the central characters from the comic do make an appearance, such as Ozymandias, Lindelof has said he doesn't consider it to be a sequel.

Last year, he shared an Instagram post that said: "Those issues are sacred ground and will not be retread nor recreated nor reproduced nor rebooted.

"They will however be remixed. We are not making a 'sequel' either.

"This story will be set in the world its creators painstakingly built... but in the tradition of the work that inspired it, this new story must be original. It has to vibrate with the seismic unpredictability of its own tectonic plates."

The next episode of Watchmen airs in the UK on Monday 28 October.
