Fans of cult sports comedy Happy Gilmore are calling for a sequel after stars Adam Sandler and Christopher McDonald exchanged messages in character to mark the 25th anniversary of the original movie.

Yep, believe it or not, it's been a QUARTER OF A CENTURY since we first saw hapless golfer Happy Gilmore (Sandler) take on Pro Golf Tour hotshot Shooter McGavin (McDonald) - smashing balls across the green with his trademark slapshot to come out on top as an unlikely champion.

To mark the milestone, Sandler shared a video of himself recreating the iconic golf swing, telling fans in the caption: "Happy loves you all! Thanks for everything!"

In the video he can be seen lining up a shot, saying: "Okay, it's been 25 years since I've done this. Let's see what happens. I'm scared.

"Shooter McGavin, this is for you."

After smacking the ball into the distance, Sandler adds: "And I'm not lying to you, that is smashed. Smashed. That went pretty well.

"You're dead, Shooter. Hahahahaha."

McDonald then replied in character as Shooter McGavin, saying in a video: "Nice drive, Gilmore.

"Twenty-five years, huh? Let's see if it's Shooter's tour."

McDonald then films himself putting a ball into a glass on the floor, saying it's 'all about the short game' and 'drive for show, putt for the dough'.

"Shooter still got it!" he says to the camera, before continuing: "Well, thank you to all the fans and thank you to you, Adam Sandler...

"Why don't you just meet me at the ninth green at nine, Gilmore? Little secret of the pros.

"Oh, and Gilmore? Wear something nice. 25th anniversary, baby!"

Naturally, the Twitter exchange had fans of the film hungry for more, using the characters' virtual reunion as the perfect segue to call for a sequel - arguing 'everyone needs it'.

One tweeted: "The people want a Happy Gilmore 2 @AdamSandler @ShooterMcGavin_."

Someone else wrote: "Happy Gilmore 2 Give the people what they want, @AdamSandler."

A third added: "Happy Gilmore 2. Everyone wants it, Everyone needs it."

Even Ben Stiller - who portrayed Nana's evil caretaker at the nursing home in the movie - added a cheeky in-character message in reply to Sandler's video.

The actor wrote: "That's a beautiful swing, Mr. Gilmore. Congrats on your anniversary, and being such a loving grandson. So happy to be a small part of taking good care of her during her 'golden years'."
