Hey, HBO has the cash...

After the announcement that the wildly popular video game The Last of Us is to be turned into a TV show co-written and produced by Craig Mazin - the man who brought us last year's Chernobyl - speculation is rife as to who will get the top billing in the forthcoming HBO series.

Now, for those who aren't aware, the post-apocalyptic PlayStation epic focuses on the relationship between a young girl called Ellie, who might just be the cure for a global pandemic which has brought the US to its knees, and Joel, a grizzled survivor tasked with keeping her safe on their journey out of the dangerous quarantine zone.

It seems as if the people - or at least the ones who can be bothered to tweet about it - want those two roles to be filled by Hugh Jackman and Maisie Williams.

Hell, that's gonna cost a bit, but after the success HBO has enjoyed in recent years, they can afford to give the people what they want, surely?

Also, as will be revealed later on, Williams has already expressed an interest, even if it was years ago.

One person commented: "With the announcement of the HBO Last of Us series, who do u think should play as Joel? Personally, I think Hugh Jackman."

Another said: "Honestly if they don't cast Hugh Jackman in the last of us...what's the point?"

A third offered: "I need Maisie Williams and Hugh Jackman for The Last of Us please and thanks"

Anyway, it might interest you to know there was actually an exchange between the video game's creator Neil Druckmann and Maisie Williams back in 2014.

On that occasion, someone suggested that she'd be perfect to play the role in any future adaptation - obviously it hadn't been conceived yet - and she replied: "100% would not say no. Ever."

Druckmann quickly responded: "That makes two of us."

See? It did happen?

Make it happen, guys. She's obviously a fan of the game.

Another person who is a fan of the game, it would seem, is Craig Mazin. After Chernobyl was such a rip-roaring success last year, fans will be chomping at the bit to see what he'll do at the helm of this beloved video game saga.

Mazin said: "Neil Druckmann is without question the finest storyteller working in the video game medium, and The Last of Us is his magnum opus.

"Getting a chance to adapt this breathtaking work of art has been a dream of mine for years, and I'm so honoured to do it in partnership with Neil."

Druckmann added: "From the first time I sat down to talk with Craig I was equally blown away by his approach to narrative and his love and deep understanding of The Last of Us.

"With Chernobyl, Craig and HBO created a tense, harrowing, emotional masterpiece. I couldn't think of better partners to bring the story of The Last of Us to life as a television show."
