Filming has wrapped for the second season of The Boys, with actor Karl Urban marking the occasion with a selfie on Instagram alongside co-stars Laz Alonso and Erin Moriarty.

In the post's caption, Urban also revealed the new series would be hitting screens in 'mid 2020', writing: "Cut and print! That's a wrap for Billy Butcher on season 2 of @theboystv. Massive thanks to our awesome crew n cast, love you all.

Adapted from the comic series of the same name - which was originally written by Garth Ennis and co-created, designed and illustrated by Darick Robertson - the Amazon Prime show stars Jack Quaid, Karl Urban, Laz Alonso, Tomer Capon, Karen Fukuhara, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Dominique McElligott, Jessie T. Usher, Chace Crawford, Nathan Mitchell, Elisabeth Shue and Simon Pegg.

It describes itself as 'an irreverent take on what happens when superheroes, who are as popular as celebrities, as influential as politicians and as revered as Gods, abuse their superpowers rather than use them for good', following a secret CIA squad who go up against a team of morally corrupt superheroes called The Seven, who use their celebrity status to get away with their crimes.

The series became an instant hit with viewers - in fact, it was even renewed for a second season a week before the first one had even debuted, with You're the Worst's Aya Cash joining the show as Stormfront - originally a bigoted male character in the comics, as well as one of the most powerful superheroes in the world.

Developer Eric Kripke has also been teasing other second season appearances on Twitter, including actor Patton Oswalt, who'll feature in a 'secret role'.

Co-creators Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg are already singing season two's praises, having seen the first epiosde.

Rogen told Collider: "They already have more resources for the second season. They're adding more characters, the scope of the show organically grows as the show continues.

"We just watched, actually, the first episode of the second season this week. It was a wonderful thing as producers.

"This is way better than I ever could've hoped it would be."
