French horror series Marianne won't be returning to Netflix for a second series.

The makers of the show announced that it had been cancelled, with writer Samuel Bodin posting the news on Instagram.

In the post, he said: "There won't be a second season for MARIANNE. We are very sorry and sad about that. But we will see you in other stories..."

The eight-episode series dropped on Friday 13 September (obviously) and fans seemed to love the creepy tale from the start, with one character in particular delivering most of the scares.

The show tells the story of a young writer named Emma (played by Victorie Du Bois), whose recurring nightmare of an evil witch is used as inspiration for her books.

However, when Emma is drawn back to her hometown, she quickly learns that the titular spirit has entered the real world and is wreaking havoc among the locals.

Creepy witches aside, the show continues to fare well with audiences across the globe, drawing comparisons to other Netflix hits including the Haunting of Hill House.

"#Marianne on Netflix is on a whole 'nother level. Everything about the show is so damn good. The storyline, the videography, the cast, everything. Kinda has the same touch as Haunting of Hill House," commented one fan at the time.

And luckily for horror fans, Haunting of Hill House is one that you'll get to see more of, with Netflix confirming last year that the next instalment of the franchise, The Haunting of Bly Manor, is on its way.

We still don't know much about the new series - however, we do know that as the first season focused on Hill House and the Crain family (loosely based on The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson), the upcoming season will centre on Bly house and will be based on the classic horror novel The Turn of the Screw by Henry James.

The book, written in 1898, tells the story a governess who goes to Bly Manor to look after two recently orphaned children, Miles and Flora, who were under the care of their uncle and had been looked after by housekeeper Mrs Grose.

But once there, the governess begins to see ghostly shadows and figures prowling about the place - bloody typical, eh?
