Critics recently got fans even more excited for upcoming Netflix series The Witcher after saying the fight scenes 'make Game of Thrones fights look awful'. Now viewers can make up their own minds - as Netflix has released a short clip of a breathtaking combat sequence from the new series.

In the clip, monster hunter Geralt of Rivia - played by Man of Steel's Henry Cavill - can be seen engaging in a brutal swordfight in the middle of a crowded dining hall.

Although the clip is only 24 seconds long, the action moves at breakneck speed. Cavill displays the intensity fans have come to expect from Geralt and demonstrated some impressive swordplay in the process as he dispatches his opponents.

Given that there's likely to be no shortage of fight scenes found throughout the series (it is about the adventures of a professional monster hunter after all), getting the tone and feel of the action right is crucial. Yet early impressions from fans of the franchise suggest they're on the right track.

The initial reaction from fans seems mostly positive, with many praising the intensity of the action and its faithfulness to the source material.

But it's not all been positive, with some criticising the rough, unpolished nature of the footage, which some suggest has been sanitised for promotional purposes.

Regardless of your opinions on the choreography or the CGI, The Witcher has all the makings of an instant classic. With a built-in fanbase and hype levels already through the roof, this could be the perfect show for you to binge out on over Christmas.

The Witcher debuts on Netflix on 20 December.
