WARNING: HUGE GAVIN & STACEY SPOILERS LIE AHEAD
It was almost expected but the Gavin & Stacey Christmas Special was everything we hoped it would be and more. In fact, it may have even opened the door for another series, or at least another special some time in the (hopefully not too distant) future.
That's because the hour-long episode ended with Nessa proposing to Smithy shortly followed by the closing credits that we just weren't prepared for. Not without a yes or no answer from him anyway.
If we rewind a little to earlier in the evening, we watched in relief as Smithy's new girlfriend, Sonia (played by Laura Aikman) awkwardly said her goodbyes and made a swift exit from Gwen's.

Nessa then went to speak to her old flame outside disguised as having a 'smoke'. Trying to justify Sonia's departure, Smithy explains: "She's really close to her parents, she's never spent Christmas away from her mum and dad before."

Some time after, Nessa - who Smithy shares a child with - says: "You know you're alright as you are don't you, Smithy. I won't lie you're not everyone's cup of tea but at the end of the day when all said and done, you're tidy."
Smithy replies: "Cheers," and Nessa continues: "I means it. And I knows it's been complicated - you and me, all this like. But I loves it and if truth me told I loves you."
In Smithy fashion, he casually says: "Yeah, I know," to which Nessa reiterates: "No Smithy you're not listening. I knows it's weird alright, but I do. I loves you. With all my heart. So..."
She removes a ring from her finger (on her left hand - could it have been the engagement ring Dave Coaches proposed with? It would be very Nessa-esque) before getting down on one knee to pop the question.

"Will you marry me?" She asked a baffled-looking Smithy who answers simply: "What?" And she says again: "Marry me".
OH YOU GUYS.
