Gino D'Acampo has revealed that he feared for his life after a buggy-racing crash that resulted in him being covered in petrol.

The 43-year-old TV chef was filming ITV's American Roadtrip with his pals Gordon Ramsay and First Dates' newly-engaged Fred Sirieix.

Gino, Gordon and Fred were taking part in a dune buggy race.

The trio were competing in a dune buggy challenge when D'Acampo ended up losing control and ploughing into their own camper van, which was parked beside the race track.

Recalling the incident, Gino told The Radio Times: "We did the Baja 400. I had a really big accident. I cut Gordon to win and lost control, and went straight into the van. I was going 70 or 80mph and I thought, 'I'm going to die.'

"The thing that scared me most was my fuel tank burst, I had petrol all over me. Fifteen seconds later Gordon smashed his buggy into the wall of the racetrack. So only Fred was left. But it was fun until I crashed."

Gino was, quite understandably, in 'total shock' and took 24 hours away from filming while 53-year-old Ramsay ended up with whiplash.

Adding to Gino's comments, a rather oblivious Fred said: "I didn't realise what had happened, I could see in the distance Gino had parked by the RV, but he hadn't parked - he had crashed into the side of it.

"The tyre was deflated, the petrol was everywhere... he was in total shock. We had to break filming."

After the fun filled success of their European tour, an energised Gordon is keen to show off the culinary delights of his adopted home, America, to Gino and Fred.

For Gordon, the States is at the forefront of cooking & produce and he's determined to show it off - destinations include Las Vegas, San Fransisco, Napa, Texas and Mexico!

It seems fans are already itching to watch the trio on their new adventures, even more so now that the nation is under self isolation.

One person wrote: "Yipppeeeeee best thing on tv," another added: "Brilliant !! Exciting adventures ahead !! Comedy laughs and new experiences let's see what awaits their travels".

Gordon, Gino And Fred: American Road Trip will air on ITV on 2 April at 9pm.
