Gremlins 3 Writer Chris Columbus Says Creatures Won't Be CGI

Columbus said he's still up for doing a third movie - and that he would still do it 'in the same way' as previous instalments

The idea of a third Gremlins film has been floating around for several years now, but while we know there's a script ready to go, not much else has been discussed publicly about what we can expect if and when it ever makes it to cinemas.

Writer Chris Columbus has now revealed a little more about one of the key elements of the movie franchise - the gremlins themselves - saying that they wouldn't be recreated with CGI for the new instalment, as no doubt many fans feared.

Speaking to Collider, Columbus offered something of an update, not only saying that everyone's just trying to sort out the logistics, but also that he'd use the same basic technologies (well, or lack thereof) to create the gremlins.

He said: "I would love to do it. I wrote a script, so there is an existing script. We're working out some rights issues right now, so we're just trying to figure out when the best time to make that film would be.

"I would still do it the same way - I would do it as tangible puppets, not CGI. Maybe having - you know we had one stop-motion scene in the first Gremlins, but I don't think I'd use much CGI in Gremlins 3."

It's been three decades since we last caught the pesky gremlins on screen, and 36 years since the original film debuted.

Columbus, who served as writer on the first movie, previously spoke about the third project way back in 2017, when he said a script had been finished - promising us it would be 'twisted and dark'.

He told /Film: "I'm really proud of the script. It is as twisted and dark as anything, so we'll see. It's always a budgetary conversation; when we're going to shoot it. I wanted to go back to the really twisted sensibility of the first movie.

"I found that was a very easy place for me to fall back into and start writing again so hopefully we'll see that movie soon."

While that will come as good news to anyone who felt a little disappointed by the lack of gore in the 1990 sequel, Columbus also made a shocking confession that Gizmo lovers might find difficult to read.

When the reporter asked whether the small, fluffy critter should be killed off, considering he's the source of all the gremlins, Columbus replied: "Very good observation. That comes up in the movie, certainly. I think it probably is a good idea to be honest with you.

"Too many people are dying."
