"I am waiting and excited for my friend James Gunn [director of the Guardians movies] to knock this next one out of the park," he said, as reported by Comicbook.com.

"He took The Suicide Squad so he's about to embark on it.

"Thor will also, the director talked to me about Thor will incorporate some of the Guardians of the Galaxy."

Then seemingly aware he may have said too much, he added: "That'll be very interesting, nobody knows, maybe I shouldn't have said anything."

Fans may already guessed this would be the case, following the conclusion to last year's Avengers: Endgame (no spoilers, but come on, it's almost been a year since it came out). However, this is the first time we've had authoritative confirmation that their adventures together are set to continue.

James Gunn Confirms Guardians Of The Galaxy 3 Will Be His Last

For now, plot details are strictly under wraps so it's anyone's guess how big - or small - a role the characters will get in the fourth Thor movie, or how writer and director Taika Waititi will fit them into the story.

As Marvel gears up for Phase 4 - with the final Black Widow trailer dropping today - Marvel lovers have been eagerly awaiting news about the third Guardians movie.

The film hit a setback when director Gunn was dropped from the project, before Disney did a U-turn and got him back on board for the third flick.

Actor Dave Bautista recently revealed that Gunn had talked about a plan for a Drax and Mantis standalone movie, telling Collider: "James Gunn had the idea to do a Drax-Mantis movie. That's what I'd be up for because there's just too much fun there. Well, he wanted to do it, he had an idea for it.

"It's just Marvel has their slot for the next fix years and they know how their story is going to go. It's hard for them to have an idea for a film and say 'yeah we want to fit that into here'. It just didn't fit into their schedule."

In response to the interview, Gunn took to Twitter to say: "True. But this was never ruled out. I still think it could be amazing."

Thor: Love and Thunder hits cinemas on 5 November 2021.
