Hugh Jackman Confirms He Won't Be Returning As Wolverine

It's been two decades since we first saw the Aussie star take on the role

Hugh Jackman has confirmed he will not be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Wolverine.

Believe it or not, it's been a whopping 20 years since we first saw Jackman flexing his claws as Wolverine in X-Men, and he continued with the character right up until 2017's Logan.

For many fans, he's become so synonymous with the role it's hard to imagine anyone else playing the character, but it looks as though they'll have to as Jackman has ruled himself out.

Speaking to the Daily Beast, he said: "I knew it was the right time for me to leave the party-not just for me, but for the character.

"Somebody else will pick it up and run with it. It's too good of a character not to. It's kind of like, you're on your way home and your friend rings you and goes, 'Oh, dude, a new DJ just came on and the music is awesome, are you going to come back?' And you say, 'Sounds good but... no.' They're fine with someone else."

Well, that all sounds fairly final, doesn't it?

This isn't the first time the Aussie star has counted himself out of playing Wolverine in the future, speaking on Sunday Today with Willie Geist all the way back in November 2018 he said: "Oh, Wolverine will be back. Someone's going to buy him, I don't know."

Geist responded: "Not you though." To which Jackman replied: "No."

Say it ain't so, mate.

Earlier this week, fellow Marvel star Mark Ruffalo said he would be keen to do a stand-alone Hulk movie, before adding that perhaps the Hulk and Wolverine could work together.

Speaking to Variety he said: "There's an idea that I think could be really interesting. We've never really followed him into his life.

"He's always kind of off on the side. He's like the Rosencrantz and Guildenstern of the Avengers. It'd be interesting to fill in all the blanks about what happened to him in between all these movies."

He later added: "Maybe Hulk and Wolverine could hook up."

Are you sure we can't tempt you, Hugh?
