The Inbetweeners 'Bus W*****s' yellow Fiat has sold for a whopping £15,000 ($21,285) at auction.

The 1996 Fiat Cinquecento, complete with filthy bumper sticker and mis-matched red door, went under the hammer yesterday (28 May) at East Bristol Auctions during its specialist Entertainment Memorabilia Auction.

It had a starting price of between £2,000 and £3,000 ($2,800 and $4,200) but buyers were keen to get their hands on the iconic car, with bids coming in from across the globe.

Auctioneer Andrew Stowe said: "The bidding was fierce and we had interest from all over the world - America, Canada, and even Australia. Everyone wanted a piece of it! We were quite overwhelmed by how popular it was.

"It just goes to show the popularity of the programme - this is the Batmobile of British comedy!

"'The car has been a real magnet for attention - driving it around the saleroom car park would make passing pedestrians shout out all manner of catchphrases, and even the local police turned up to have a photograph with it! It's been great fun having it around!'

"People just want to make others laugh - especially after recent times - and I can't think of anything better to do that job than this car. It's a smile-maker."

It was eventually snapped up by a private collector in the US.

Speaking before the sale, Andrew said: "When it arrived at our saleroom there was literally a queue of passers-by wanting their picture taken with it.

"It's just so British. It's an underdog, an unloved car - yet everyone wants a piece of it. Quite remarkable for a twenty-year-old yellow Fiat!"

The car featured in one of the TV show's most memorable scenes - when Jay (James Buckley) referred to a bunch of people waiting at a bus stop as 'bus w*****s' moments before the car broke down.

However, despite the fact that it gave Simon (Joe Thomas) a fair bit of trouble in the show, the car is actually in good nick and has a full year's MOT.

The car once belonged to a stuntman and has also appeared in a stunt show after featuring on The Inbetweeners.
