Idris Elba has revealed that the anticipated Luther movie 'is happening' - and apparently the 'sky is the limit' when it comes to seeing his titular detective portrayed on the big screen.

The Hollywood actor discussed the project on Friday (31 July) backstage at the 2020 BAFTA TV Awards after receiving the Special Award for his contributions to TV as an actor, writer and producer.

The 47-year-old told Digital Spy: "I've maintained I'd like to see it come to a film, and that is where I think we are heading towards...

"And I'm looking forward to making that happen. It is happening."

The star went on to discuss his ambitions to scale up the psychological crime drama, allowing for DCI John Luther and co. to take their crime-solving saga global.

He added: "With film, the sky is the limit. You can be a little bit more bold with the storylines. And a little bit more international, and a little more up the scale. But John Luther is always going to be John Luther."

The latest revelation from Elba will come as welcome news for the fans, who have been calling for a Luther film ever since the show's fifth season ended in January 2019, with no news yet on if there will be a season six.

This isn't the first time the star has suggested a feature-length version of the BBC show could be happening.

Back in 2018, Elba told LADbible: "For me it would be nice to take Luther up a scale. Make the storyline bigger, make it slightly more international."

When asked about how the show would handle telling the story in a 90-minute spin-off, rather than over several hour-long episodes, Elba said: "We've made varied seasons, one season was six episodes, one was four - Luther's adaptable.

"I think if we can figure out the formula to keep an audience captivated for an hour and a half, on a movie, I think Luther has definitely got the attributes to make that happen.

"When you scale a movie up, you have to give it size - that means taking it into other territories, internationally, but I still think it will feel like the 'Gotham City' in London. But obviously on a bigger international scale, it could take us anywhere."

Speaking to Sky News at a virtual Q&A for his comedy series In the Long Run, he said: "I've made it very clear that I'd like to see Luther come back as a film. And I can tell you this, that we are this close to making a film of Luther."
