In the 35 years that Neighbours has been on our screens, we've watched as characters have come and gone.

Some have been killed off, others simply told never to come back to Ramsay Street, while a minority have just faded into obscurity.

There are some roles which have stood the test of time, but arguably no one has reached the same level of fandom and iconic status as Jarrod Vincenzo 'Toadfish' Rebecchi.

Toadie has been on Neighbours for a quarter of a century and his first ever episode was broadcast on this day back in 1995. Can you imagine sticking it out for a full quarter-century?

Incredibly, Ryan Moloney, the man who brings Toadie to life on screen, was only meant to feature in one episode of the soap opera but producers decided to keep him on board as a recurring cast member.

When he began on the show all those years ago, he was a loveable 'class clown', forever getting into all sorts of mischief alongside his mate Billy Kennedy. But as the programme progressed, he went through some pretty serious relationships and ended up becoming a lawyer.

We've all watched in awe as he's gone from being a silly teenager to a caring, empathetic adult.

But a lot has happened in between those life phases.

Toadie has been shot in the back, seen his dog die, had his adoptive son kidnapped, had his wife go missing, been charged with inciting a crime, nearly had another wedding go up in flames, been hit by a car, fractured his spine and had his drink spiked. Oh, and his third wife died.

That is one hell of a lot of plot twists for one character. But to be fair, all that spread over 25 years is pretty impressive.

How Toadie has survived it all is beyond us, but that's why we love him: because it sticks it out in the tough times.

Ryan has been honoured multiple times for his longtime role, having won Best Daytime Star award at the Inside Soap Awards four times, nominated for Best Actor in a Soap at the 2004 Rose d'Or Awards and nominated for the Logie Award for Most Popular Actor.

Here's to another 25 years, Toadfish - Neighbours wouldn't be the same without you.
