After much speculation, Jeffrey Wright has been confirmed to be involved in The Batman.

Director Matt Reeves revealed the Casino Royale actor will play Commissioner James Gordon, the Caped Crusader's trusty ear and eye inside the Gotham police force.

The news was revealed in a simple tweet where Reeves uploaded a GIF of Wright from an interview with The Atlantic.

Wright will join Robert Pattinson, who will play Batman. Zoë Kravitz will star as Catwoman and Paul Dano will play The Riddler.

There was speculation that Jonah Hill was being lined up for a role, however that now appears to have been scrapped.

In an interview with Access Hollywood, Pattinson was asked whether or not he'd practised his Batman voice yet, with the interviewer mentioning Dafoe's 'gritty' voice in The Lighthouse, a film the two have recently starred in together.

Pattinson replied: "Willem's voice in this was quite inspiring for it, to be honest. It is pretty similar, the voice I'm gonna do, to Willem's."

Making a swashbuckling 'Aaargh!' noise, Pattinson laughed, adding with a smile: "I think Batman has a sort of piratey kind of voice - I think that will really suit it."

While Pattinson had been rumoured to be the new Batman for some time, it wasn't until May this year that Warner Bros officially confirmed that he would, indeed, be taking on the iconic role.

But Pattinson said he found it stressful that the gossip had started before he'd even auditioned for the role, worried that it might put off the film company from working with him.

Speaking to Variety, he explained that he was on his way to the Cannes Film Festival when someone tipped off the press about his potential casting.

He said: "When that thing leaked, I was f***ing furious. Everyone was so upset. Everyone was panicking from my team. I sort of thought that had blown up the whole thing."

After Hill reportedly pulled out of the project, people on social media were calling for someone else to fill his shoes and potentially play The Penguin.

Jason Alexander, the legendary actor who played George Costanza in Seinfeld, reckons he should be considered for the role, which hasn't been seen on the big screen since Danny DeVito portrayed the supervillain in Batman Returns.

Writing on Twitter, Alexander said: "Ok, Jonah Hill passed. Clearly the next move for Penguin has to be someone familiar with marine biology. Ahem."

Now THAT would be a movie to watch.
