Viewers of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon often enjoy the host's choreographed skits and features with his celebrity guests - but it was a seemingly unplanned moment between him and RuPaul that got people talking after his show on Thursday.

As Fallon held up a copy of Vanity Fair, featuring RuPaul on the cover, he said: "This was gigantic, this was the first time a drag queen has ever been put on the cover of-"

At this moment, Fallon's guest interjected in a seemingly disgruntled tone: "A drag queen?? A drag queen?!"

The studio then fell silent as Fallon froze, looking deeply fearful he had said something out of line.

Mercifully for Fallon, RuPaul then added: "I am the queen of drag!"

With the awkward silence broken and the tension lifted, the audience broke out in rapturous cheers and applause, while Fallon laughed nervously and took a deep breath before apologising to his guest.

Of course, this could have been a rehearsed little moment between the two, but if it was then it was undoubtedly the most convincing performance Fallon has ever delivered.

Fallon took a moment to breathe after RuPaul revealed he was just messing with him.

Judging by the reaction on social media, it seems most people are in no doubt the 45-year-old s*** himself in that moment.

One person said: "LMFAOOOOOOO Jimmy Fallon thought he was about to get CANCELLED I'm SCREAMING."

Another added: "Fallon: oh no what did I do, isn't the term drag queen, did I offended him... is the lgbtq community coming for me... is my late night career over..."

A third added: "DRAG QUEEN? DRAG QUEEEEN?!?" Jimmy was scared s***less thinking he had given offense."

Another said: "Jimmy Fallon already started seeing #jimmyfalloniscancelled trending when he thought he offended RuPaul"

Well, the host will no doubt be relieved that #jimmyfalloniscancelled is not trending, though #jimmyfallonthoughthewascancelled may as well be.
