The release date for John Wick: Chapter 4 has been pushed back more than a year, with Lionsgate announcing it will now hit cinemas on 27 May 2022.

The fourth movie in the franchise was originally due to be released on 21 May 2021 but the studio has had to move the date back due to the coronavirus pandemic interrupting filming and production schedules.

The announcement comes after director Chad Stahelski hinted that the date could be moved in an interview with Collider.

He told the news outlet: "Between how much we want to expand the John Wick - let's just call it a 'franchise', I guess - and the pandemic, I couldn't tell you a release date for the next one. I mean, Matrix was only four weeks in when this all happened.

"So, Keanu's gotta go finish his commitment up on The Matrix, which is a big deal and which I think will probably take him until the end of the year. Then we have to go into our prep mode and the we'll start.

"So release dates, I'm sure with every production from Dave [Leitch's] stuff to our stuff, who knows right now."

Other movies titled pushed by Lionsgate include the Saw spin-off Spiral, which was set to be released later this month but will now land on 21 May 2021, while The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard has also been delayed by a year and will now be released on 20 August 2021.

However, a number of Lionsgate titles have managed to hold on to their original release dates, such as the new Nicolas Cage flick The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, which will arrive on the big screen on 19 March 2021; and Chaos Walking which is keeping its 22 January 2021 date.

Damon Wolf, CMO and head of global distribution told The Hollywood Reporter: "As audiences from around the world head back to theatres, most will return feeling that specialness that only the traditional theatrical experience can offer.

"Lionsgate is thrilled to present such a wide variety of films with many more to come.

"From great branded IP to unique stories from new voices, the terrifying re-imagined and some truly hysterical comedy, we join with our partners in exhibition in welcoming movie lovers back to their favourite theatres with something special for everyone."
