John Wick spin-off The Continental is set to air after the fourth movie, which is due to hit cinemas in May next year.

The Starz show will be a prequel, centred on the origins of the infamous assassins' hotel featured in the films, according to reports.

Lionsgate/Starz

Starz President and CEO Jeffrey Hirsch told the Television Critics Association: "I had a meeting on a season pitch for this yesterday. We like the group of writers, and we're trying to get it in the right place so it doesn't interfere with the motion picture. It will air sometime after the fourth movie."

His latest comments are in keeping with a statement he made last August in which he said the new series was in 'early development'.

"My sense is that where we are today, the movie date has been set but we're still in early development on the series so [it will air] most likely after," he told Deadline.

The fourth movie in the franchise will arrive in cinemas on 21 May 2021 - the same day The Matrix 4, makings. making it a pretty good weekend for Keanu Reeves fans.

Lionsgate broke the news about the release date via a campaign that encouraged fans to send a text to a special number.

Once sent, they were sent a reply that read: "You have served. You will be of service. John Wick: Chapter 4 is coming - May 21, 2021."

And there's even better news for fans of the movies, because Reeves has said he's happy to play the character as long as people want him to.

When asked by GQ how much longer he would continue playing the role, he said: "As far as my legs can take me. As far as the audience wants to go."

Reeves opened up about the character, telling GQ: "He's got this beautiful, tragic conundrum - these two selves. The John who was married, and John Wick, the assassin. John wants to be free. But the only way he knows how is through John Wick.

"And John Wick keeps fucking killing people and breaking rules. We're really watching a person fight for their life and their soul."
