Kevin Smith Is Working On A Mallrats Sequel Called Twilight Of The Mallrats

Kevin Smith has revealed that he is writing a sequel to cult 90s comedy Mallrats.

In an end-of-year post to his Instagram account, the 49-year-old announced he was about to start work writing a script titled Twilight of the Mallrats.

But that wasn't all. Smith also said that he had also begun work on a script for another sequel, this time for Clerks III.

Hallelujah!

He said: "It's gonna be hard for 2020 to measure up to 2019 - but I'm off to a fun start by writing stuff for Brodie Bruce & Co. to say in the new script I'm calling TWILIGHT OF THE MALLRATS! The CLERKS III script is also underway, so we'll see which flick will be my first film of the roaring 20s!"

The sequel to Mallrats has been a long time coming, with Smith having announced in 2015 that he was working on a script titled MallBrats.

However, after struggling to sort out a deal for the rights with Universal, Smith planned to turn it into a 10-episode series.

Speaking before the project was put to one side, he told Digital Spy: "The Mallrats series is like a very long John Hughes movies, I didn't have a lot of time for the second generation of characters - for Banner Bruce, and her friends [in the script for the film sequel] so now that's where the sequel leans equally towards.

"The opening episode is one of my favourite things I've written. it's really fast and it's funny."

Sadly, however, the series never got off the ground and was scrapped.

Four years on from that disappointment, Smith has seen the return of another couple of his iconic characters Jay and Silent Bob, who made a comeback last year in Jay and Silent Bob Reboot.

In the recent post, Smith also thanked fans for all their support over the past 12 months, joking that he was glad he stayed alive long enough to see it all come to fruition.

He wrote: "2019 was seriously one of the best years of my life! So many of my dreams came true this year, as well as a few big things too dazzling to even dare dream about!

"From the return of @jayandsilentbob, to having my career literally cemented at the legendary @chinesetheatres, to Clerks being accepted into the @librarycongress - 2019 kept giving and giving!

"Sooooo glad I didn't drop dead back in 2018, because I would've missed all the stuff I listed with my pic."

Adding: "It was the decade in which I almost died of a massive heart attack, and the decade where I went vegan and got down to my high school weight! Who knows what the next decade holds in store for us - but I'm ready to turn the page and find out! Happy New Year, my friends!"
