While there are a hell of a lot of negatives that are associated with being in a coronavirus-related lockdown, slivers of opportunity have presented themselves to some people.

Take Kevin Smith for example, who has found time during self-isolation to complete the script for the highly-anticipated sequel to Mallrats.

Posting a photo of the first draft of Twilight of the Mallrats to Instagram, the actor says all this time indoors has been a massive help in him completing the script.

He wrote: "Thanks in part to the #Quarantine, I finally finished a funny first draft of 'TWILIGHT OF THE MALLRATS'!

"25 years after the original, Brodie Bruce will be back for an unnecessary sequel set against the Mallpocalypse!

"Rene, Willam, Gwen, Brandy, T.S., Trish, Mr. Svenning, LaFours and the rebooted @jayandsilentbob are the returning Rats in an Askewniverse imagining about what happens when the sidewalk sales end, and 'happily ever after' is easier to say than live!

"The #jayandsilentbob stuff is some of my favorite conceptual comedy I've ever written but the whole script is silly, sentimental and sweet. And at 98 pages, the story moves like a brakeless bullet train!"

But don't expect this to get on the big screen anytime soon as the coronavirus has caused movie production to be put on hold.

However, Kevin Smith reckons it's a brilliant first step to getting the sequel in motion.

"It'll be months before we can actually shoot it, but if you wanna know the backstory, I recorded an entire episode about 'Twilight of the Mallrats' for my new podcast, 'Silent Bob Speaks'.

"And now that *this* script is done, it's on to a new draft of #moosejaws and then the first draft of the new version of #clerks3!"

The sequel to Mallrats has been a long time coming, with Smith having announced in 2015 that he was working on a script titled MallBrats.

However, after struggling to sort out a deal for the rights with Universal, Smith planned to turn it into a 10-episode series.

Speaking before the project was put to one side, he told Digital Spy: "The Mallrats series is like a very long John Hughes movies, I didn't have a lot of time for the second generation of characters - for Banner Bruce, and her friends [in the script for the film sequel] so now that's where the sequel leans equally towards."

Sadly, however, the series never got off the ground and was scrapped.

Thankfully though, it seems like Twilight of the Mallrats is well on its way to becoming a reality.
