Furiosa, the Mad Max: Fury Road prequel, will hit cinemas on 23 June 2023, Warners Bros has said.

The upcoming flick, directed by George Miller, will see Anya Taylor-Joy as Furiosa, a role previously played by Charlize Theron.

Chris Hemsworth and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II are also set to star in the prequel.

Furisoa is set while the character is in her 20s and centres on her time in the Green Place with female warrior group Vuvalini.

Before Taylor-Joy was cast, Miller had hoped that they could somehow have Theron reprise the role but thinks the age-down techniques aren't quite up to scratch yet.

He said: "For the longest time, I thought we could just use CG de-aging on Charlize, but I don't think we're nearly there yet.

"Despite the valiant attempts on The Irishman, I think there's still an uncanny valley.

"Everyone is on the verge of solving it, [in] particular Japanese video-game designers, but there's still a pretty wide valley, I believe."

Theron said not being able to play the character again was 'tough to swallow'.

She told The Hollywood Reporter: "It's a little heart-breaking, for sure. I really love that character, and I'm so grateful that I had a small part in creating her.

"She will forever be someone I think of and reflect on fondly."

Meanwhile, Taylor-Joy has said she's 'so excited' about taking on the role.

Speaking on the MTV's Happy Sad Confused podcast The Queen's Gambit star said: "I fell in love with Furiosa because of the way Charlize presented [her].

"She did such an incredible job. It was so beautiful.

"I can't even think about trying to step into her shoes. It has to be something different because it just can't be done.

"I've already started dreaming about [Furiosa] and she's coming in very strong. I'm so committed to working as hard as possible as I can. I always said that I wanted a role that I would have to give everything to.

"It wouldn't just be my mind but my body, what I'm doing with myself when I'm not on set. I'm so excited for that and to push myself past the limits of what my brain thought was possible."

Furiosa is released on 23 June 2023.
