Matilda actor Mara Wilson has said she 'wouldn't say no' to a cameo appearance in the upcoming remake of Roald Dahl's classic tale.

The 33-year-old actor - who starred in the first film version back in 1996, when she was just nine - was speaking to fans on Twitter when the possibility of a sequel was brought up (an idea she's not too keen on).

One fan suggested that if there was ever a sequel to the original movie, she could be cast to play Matilda's mum - to which Mara said: "I honestly hope there is never a Matilda sequel."

Another fan agreeing with her, adding: "Or a remake!"

They went on to suggest that Mara would be good for the role of Matilda's teacher, Miss Honey, but the actor disagreed, writing: "People say this all the time, and I appreciate it, but you REALLY have to consider casting when you make a movie.

"I really wouldn't be the right choice to play Miss Honey."

Another fan suggested: "I think you'd make a fine extra cameo! Just as a callback, or I would put you in charge of the script if this was my project."

Mara seemed on board with the cameo suggestion, writing: "I mean I probably wouldn't say no to a cameo! But I really don't think there should be a sequel. I feel like they should let the characters have their happy ending."

The new remake comes courtesy of Netflix, with Alisha Weir, from Knocklyon in South Dublin, cast in the lead role.

Alisha's drama teacher was very, very excited about it on Twitter.

"Absolutely over the moon to finally announce that my Drama Student Alisha Weir has landed the title role of 'Matilda' in the Roald Dahl Netflix production of Matilda!!!!" wrote Johnny Ward, who you might remember as Ciaran Holloway in Fair City and Pauley from Love/Hate.

Oscar winner and general superstar Emma Thompson will also star - she played Nanny McPhee, but you already knew that, right?

The new version is set to be a musical adaptation of the classic Roald Dahl book, rather than a straight remake of the 90s movie.
