Michael Caine Says Batman Was One Of The Greatest Things He's Ever Done

A lofty statement when you've had a career as illustrious as his

The legendary British actor Sir Michael Caine has appeared in more than 130 films in a long and distinguished career spanning more than six decades.

As such, his description of Batman as 'one of the greatest things I've ever done in my life' really is saying something.

The veteran actor - who turns 87 tomorrow (Saturday) - recounted how he got involved with the Christopher Nolan trilogy in an interview with Indian newspaper The Hindu.

He said: "He [Nolan] came to the front door of my house in the country with a script. I could see him through the glass but I couldn't recognise him. The moment he introduced himself, I knew exactly who he was because I was a great fan of his three small films.

"I told him, 'I am too old for Batman. Do you want me to play the butler? What would my dialogues be? Would you like another beverage or more custard?'."

Nolan won over Caine though, explaining that he saw the character of Alfred Pennyworth as much more than just a butler - more the 'the foster-father of Batman'.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Caine said: "So, I did the movie and it was one of the greatest things I have done in my life."

The two-time Oscar winning actor went on to feature in numerous Nolan films, including The Prestige, Inception and Interstellar, and Caine reckons he's been a lucky charm for the director.

He said: "All the films I have made with him have raked in over a billion dollars, so he has to have me in a film even if he has no part for me. In Dunkirk, I was only a voice-over and I got billing in the credit title."

Accordingly, Caine also has a role in Nolan's upcoming thriller, Tenet, which is due to be released in July; however, he has no real idea about what we can expect from the film.

He said: "He [Nolan] is so secretive he won't let me have the script. All I had was one day's work and he gave me my pages. I did my part and shot only with John David.

"I haven't heard anything since."

Well, it wouldn't be a good thriller if there was no sense of mystery, would it?
