Comedian Michael McIntyre apologised to viewers last night (12 December) when none of the contestants managed to take home any cash in the latest episode of The Wheel.

The new gameshow, which premiered last month, sees contestants attempt to answer general knowledge questions with the help of seven celebrities, who are all versed in different areas of expertise.

The celebs are - for some reason - all strapped to the outside of a giant wheel.

Each question is usually worth £3,000, while landing on a 'gold' expert means £10,000 in dosh is up for grabs.

McIntyre claimed he never predicted an outcome where no one managed to land any cash, yet that's exactly what happened in last night's 'depressing' show.

He told viewers at the end of the episode: "This show is supposed to raise the mood of the nation, this is worse than Newsnight!

"This is so depressing! I would rather watch a Prime Ministerial briefing!

"We never thought nobody would win! It maybe came up in one meeting, and then we were like, 'Naa'.

"One in four, three times? Naa. And look at us now, a bunch of losers.

"I am so horrified. Tony has lost his job because he has embarrassed himself to much with his questions.

"Maura can't go back to Ireland.

"This has been the worst night of my life, I am never speaking to anybody here ever again.

"It says on the autocue, 'Thank you to the celebrity experts', but I don't think I should read that one."

The celebrities were indeed of little help in the episode, with the most egregious example being former Love Island contestant Maura Higgins ballsing up on a question about her native Ireland - which ended up costing contestant Barry £10,000.

Barry - with Maura on hand to help - was asked: "Geographically speaking, from which of these Irish counties would it be most accurate to say 'It's a long way to Tipperary'?"

The options were: Limerick, Donegal, Cork or Dublin.

Maura wavered, first saying it was Donegal before changing her answer to Cork. Barry himself said he had a gut feeling the answer was Donegal but decided to trust in Maura's local knowledge - which ended up being a costly mistake as Donegal was in fact the correct answer.

DJ Tony Blackburn also failed to cover himself in glory and hampered Barry's chances of victory, later taking to Twitter to apologise to him.

He wrote: "Having just appeared on #thewheel and failed miserably on my question I want to apologise to contestant Barry, mind you we were all terrible but it was fun (probably not for Barry)."

Better luck next time, I guess.
