National Treasure TV Series Being Worked On By Disney+

There's talk of a third big-screen edition, too

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has confirmed that plans are in the works for a Disney+ TV series from the National Treasure franchise.

Yes, fans of Nicolas Cage's family adventure films will be glad to learn there will be a brand new series based on the same concepts.

Not only that, but - if we're lucky - we'll also get a third instalment of the films, hopefully starring Cage himself.

Bruckheimer recently spoke to Collider about the possibility and said the series, and a follow-up to 2007's National Treasure: Book of Secrets, is planned.

He told them: "We're certainly working on one [National Treasure] for streaming and we're working on one for the big screen.

"Hopefully, they'll both come together and we'll bring you another National Treasure, but they're both very active.

"The one for Disney+ is a much younger cast. It's the same concept but a young cast. The one for theatrical would be the same cast."

There we go, get Nicky Cage back on the job.

So, it's early days just yet, but maybe the plans are a little bit further along than you might immediately think.

Bruckheimer added: "The film version is being written right now. The television version is in process. We have a pilot script done and an outline of the future episodes."

It had looked at one stage like this might never happen. In fact, Jon Turteltaub - who directed the first two flicks - had said that he, Bruckheimer and Cage were ready to get started, but Disney wasn't ready to part with the cash.

In an interview in 2018, Turteltaub told ComicBook.com: "I would love there to be. Nic is like, in wardrobe right now. Jerry Bruckheimer is ready to go. We would love to."

Turteltaub went on to say that Disney would have to 'come up with about $80m' to get the film off the floor, but it would seem they've either found a solution to that, or come around the table.

Obviously, Nic Cage is a busy man, what with his constant stream of films and - reportedly - the lead role in the forthcoming Tiger King adapted series.

Disney's Executive Chairman - at the time, CEO - Bob Iger said earlier this year that the film was a popular choice, but had yet to be set in motion.

He told Variety: "I know that Jerry Bruckheimer who produced National Treasure 1 and 2 would like to make a third movie and I know that discussions about that film have gone on, probably since 2016, with our studio, but I know that they have not greenlit such a film.

"They have talked about a number of different possibilities both on the creative side and from a timing perspective and I just don't have anything to announce, though I did speak with Mr Bruckheimer not long ago about it and I know his passion for that franchise remains pretty strong.

"We love those first two films too, but we're not quite there yet."

Well, this latest announcement makes it seem closer than ever.
